The Hunter 4G Mini wildlife camera can be conveniently controlled and configured remotely via the Modernhunter app or the web app. This allows you to manage your camera completely remotely without having to be on site.

Remote control of the camera

Directly from the app or web app, you can:

Change all camera settings
Format the SD card
Trigger a restart of the camera
Request recordings that have already been sent again in HD quality

The new transmission is exactly the same as the uncompressed recording stored on the SD card.

Which settings can be adjusted

The following points, among others, can be specified in the camera settings:

What is the queue and how does remote control work?

Accepted Answer

The camera operates in energy-saving mode during normal operation. In this state, it is not permanently online and cannot receive commands immediately.

All commands that you send to the camera in the app or web app are therefore first stored in a queue.

Function of the queue

Commands are temporarily stored in the camera's queue and wait there until the camera reestablishes contact with the server. As soon as a connection is established, the camera automatically retrieves all waiting commands and executes them.

No commands are lost, even if the camera is currently unavailable.

When does the camera connect to the server?

The camera contacts the Modernhunter server in the following cases:

When the camera is restarted
When sending a recording
After the set connection interval has expired

What happens with each connection

With each connection to the server:

The camera transmits its current status, for example, battery level, signal strength, and memory
it retrieves all commands waiting for it in the queue
it accepts new settings and actions

Each server contact is used to process the entire queue.

Camera online time

After establishing the connection, the camera remains online for about 5 minutes. During this time, further commands can be received immediately and implemented directly.

The camera then automatically switches back to energy-saving mode.

Your advantage

This system saves power and at the same time ensures that all commands are executed reliably. You have full control over your camera at all times, even when it is not permanently online.

What is the connection interval in the camera settings?

The connection interval determines how often your camera automatically connects to your Modernhunter account. This regular contact is important when no recordings are being sent, but the camera still needs to receive commands or setting changes.

When does the camera connect to the server?

The camera contacts the server in the following cases:

When the camera is restarted
When sending a recording
After the set connection interval has expired

What happens during each connection?

With each connection:

the camera transmits its current status, for example battery level, signal strength, and memory
it retrieves all commands that are waiting for it in the queue in the user account

This ensures that no settings or actions are lost.

Notes on setting the connection interval

The shorter the connection interval is set, the more frequently the camera connects to the account. This results in a faster response to commands, but also increases power consumption.

The camera is factory set to 24 hours. This setting offers a good compromise between response time and battery life.

Special feature: Real time

With the Real time interval, the camera remains permanently connected to the server. Commands are thus received immediately and implemented without delay.

However, this setting should only be used if the camera is connected to an external power source. Otherwise, the batteries would be discharged after a short time when operating on battery power.

Question 6

What do "Active Schedule 1" and "Active Schedule 2" mean?

In the Hunter 4G Mini camera settings, you can set two different working times. These are referred to as Active Schedule 1 and Active Schedule 2.

Function of active schedules

You can set a start time and a stop time individually for each schedule. This allows you to determine exactly when the camera is active and takes and sends recordings, and when it pauses.

Typical examples of use

The two schedules allow you to work flexibly, for example:

Leave the camera active only at night and pause it during the day
Use the camera only at certain times, such as in the morning and evening

The two schedules allow you to set up to two active time slots per day.

Why is my camera not sending any images?

Accepted Answer

If your camera is not sending images, there could be several reasons for this. Please check the following points step by step.

1. Is there sufficient credit available?

The camera can only connect to the internet and send images if there is sufficient credit available on the SIM card.

Tip
Check your credit balance directly with your SIM card provider.

2. Is the transmission function activated?

On some camera models, the transmission function can be deactivated.
The SIM card itself can also be deactivated in the camera menu.

Make sure that:

the transmission function is activated in the camera menu
the SIM card is active

3. Are recordings being saved to the memory card?

If recordings cannot be saved due to a problem with the SD card, nothing can be sent.

Tip
Format the SD card on your PC or replace it as a test and then check the sending function again.

Question 9

Camera triggers without detecting movement

Accepted Answer

The camera takes a picture as soon as the PIR sensor (motion sensor) detects a moving heat source. However, if you receive an image that shows no visible movement, there could be several reasons for this.

Common reasons

Moving, heated branches or leaves
Branches or shrubs heated by the sun move in the wind and are detected as a heat source.
Small animals in the grass or leaves
Mice or other small animals are often very small or only briefly visible in the image and therefore difficult to detect.
Birds or bats flying by
These may have already left the detection area before the photo is taken.
Combination of sun and wind
This is one of the most common reasons for unintended triggers.
Installation above water surfaces
Reflections and temperature differences can irritate the sensor.

How to avoid false triggers

Reposition the camera, for example in the shade or with less movement in the foreground
Reduce the sensitivity of the motion sensor in the camera settings
With the Hunter 4G Mini camera, the sensitivity can be adjusted directly in the app

Which batteries are best for operating my wildlife camera?

Accepted Answer

Choosing the right batteries depends primarily on the outside temperature. Different types of batteries are more suitable depending on the season.

Summer use (above 10 °C)

In mild temperatures, high-quality alkaline batteries are usually perfectly adequate. Batteries that are specially designed for digital cameras are ideal. These offer:

a long service life
high performance for short periods, for example when taking and sending photos at night

Winter use (below 10 °C)

At low temperatures, the performance of alkaline batteries drops by about 40 percent. For winter, we therefore recommend:

Lithium batteries
Or connecting an external lead battery

These options are significantly more resistant to cold and ensure a reliable power supply.

Note on rechargeable batteries

Rechargeable AA or Mignon batteries are only suitable to a limited extent, as they usually only supply 1.2 volts instead of 1.5 volts. This can shorten the camera's operating time.

However, they can be used without concern as long as the batteries do not generate voltage peaks above 1.8 volts.

How do I set up a Seissiger wildlife camera with Supersim in Modernhunter?

Seissiger wildlife cameras with Supersim can be easily integrated into the Modernhunter app. Setup takes just a few steps.

Follow these steps to set up your camera for use with the Modernhunter SIM card.

Step 1: Create a camera in Modernhunter

Open the Modernhunter app or the Modernhunter portal
Go to Cameras and tap on the plus symbol
Select Standard camera
Complete the setup

At the end, you will be shown a unique email address. This address will later be the recipient for the recordings from your camera.

Please make a note of or copy this email address.

Step 2: Download the PC program

Open the program on your computer

Click on Load in the lower left corner.
Load the file Seissiger_Modernhunter_Config.CFG.

This file already contains the most important settings, such as APN and network parameters.

Step 4: Save configuration file

Click Save as.

Save the file directly to an SD card.

Step 5: Load settings into the camera

Insert the SD card into your SEISSIGER Special Cam (standard version).
Set the camera switch to SETUP

Step 2: Rename the camera in the Zeiss Secacam app

In order for Modernhunter to clearly identify the recordings, the camera name in the Zeiss Secacam app must contain the Modernhunter camera code.

Open the Zeiss Secacam app
Go to the Cameras page
Select the camera you want to connect to Modernhunter
Tap the gear icon in the top right corner
Enter the Modernhunter camera code under Camera name

Open the ICU app

Step 3: Customize camera names in the ICU app

The technical requirements for connecting Dörr cameras are not yet in place. Therefore, recordings from Dörr wildlife cameras cannot currently be transferred to Modernhunter.

🔗 Connect contacts

Before you can share camera locations and their recordings with other users, you must first connect your account with your friend's. Here's how:

Open the Modernhunter app and go to Menu → Contacts.

Option A: Share the code at the top of your contact page with your friend. Your friend enters this code using the keyboard icon (1) in the top right corner.

Option B: Show your friend the QR code from your contact page (Show QR code) and they scan it using the camera icon (2) in the top right corner.

The other person will receive a contact request and confirm it. → Now you are connected and can share camera locations with each other.

📍 Share location

Open Locations in the menu.

Select the desired location and tap the gear icon ⚙ to access the location settings.

At the bottom, you can select contacts who should have access to this location.

🔒 Set permissions

Lock closed: Only viewing recordings allowed.

Lock open: Full access (control cameras, request HD recordings, delete recordings).

If you want to top up credit to operate your trail camera with a Modernhunter SIM card — or if the four-week trial period of your Hunter 4G Mini has expired — simply visit the website www.modernhunter.de .

There you can select and purchase the desired credit package. The credit will then be automatically added to your user account and is available immediately.

💡 Tip: The topped-up credit can be used by all cameras connected with a Modernhunter SIM card.

How much does one photo cost?

The cost of sending a photo depends on the file size. Files are billed in 300 KB increments:

Up to 300 KB → 1 Coin (= approx. €0.008)

Up to 600 KB → 2 Coins (= approx. €0.016)

and so on.

With the Hunter 4G Mini camera, photos in the following sizes are usually under 300 KB and therefore cost only 1 Coin (approx. €0.008):

Small (768x432)

Medium (1,536x864)

Photos in full size (3,072x1,728) are typically larger than 300 KB and therefore cost more than 1 Coin per image.

How much does a video cost?

Accepted Answer

The cost of sending a video depends on the file size. Files are billed in 300 KB increments:

Up to 300 KB → 1 Coin (= approx. €0.008)

Up to 600 KB → 2 Coins (= approx. €0.016)

and so on.

The size of a video can vary greatly and depends on several factors:

Video length – the longer the video, the larger the file.

Resolution – higher image quality (e.g., 1080p instead of 720p) creates larger files.

Frame rate (FPS) – more frames per second = smoother but larger video. Hunter 4G Mini: Videos from the Hunter 4G Mini are sent as preview files with a reduced 15 FPS to keep the file size small. Original videos stored on the SD card have 30 FPS and are therefore much larger.

Compression & format – modern formats (e.g., MP4 with H.264) are smaller than older ones. Hunter 4G Mini: We use the new H.265 compression method, which makes files significantly smaller for transmission than conventional methods — aiming for the smallest possible file size with maximum video quality.

Motion in the scene – lots of movement or changing scenes increase file size.

Color vs. black and white – night recordings are usually smaller than daytime videos with many colors.

Example: A short 5-second video with low resolution may remain under 300 KB (1 Coin), while a longer or higher-resolution video may reach 600 KB or more (2 Coins or higher).

Question 24

Do I need to top up credit separately for each SIM card?

Accepted Answer

No, you only need to top up credit once per account. The credit is stored centrally in your user account and can be shared by all cameras using a Modernhunter SIM card.

This means:

It doesn’t matter which camera uses the credit or if one camera sends more than another.

Credit is only deducted when a recording is actually sent.

If no recordings are sent, no costs are incurred — there is no monthly base fee and no subscription.

As long as there is credit in your account, all your Modernhunter cameras can continue transmitting recordings.

SIM card parameters, APN, email settings, etc.

No connection to the mobile network?

Accepted Answer

Possible cause: oxidized SIM card

If your wireless trail camera suddenly can’t connect to the mobile network, this may be due to an oxidized SIM card.

🔍 Why does this happen? With frequent use in humid weather or after a long period of operation, an invisible oxide layer can form on the contact surfaces of the SIM card. This prevents the camera from correctly detecting the SIM card.

How to fix the issue:

Remove the SIM card

Gently rub the contact surface (the gold chip) with a dry, lint-free cloth using light pressure

Reinsert the SIM card

After that, your camera should reconnect to the mobile network without issues.

💡 Tip: Repeat this process every time you change the batteries — it’s a simple way to reliably prevent connection problems.

Where can I order a SIM card?

In the Modernhunter Shop, you can order Modernhunter SIM cards for €5 each.

After receiving the SIM card, you can add it in the app under Menu → SIM cards. Simply tap the “+” icon in the top right corner and scan the barcode on the Modernhunter SIM card. This will add the SIM card to your account and automatically activate it.

Which network does the Modernhunter SIM card use?

The Modernhunter SIM card is a multi-network card. This means it can connect to all available mobile networks across Europe — in 41 countries and over 125 different networks.

This is a major advantage, especially for trail cameras used in remote or forested areas with weak reception, and a key difference compared to standard data SIM cards that typically support only one provider.

The Modernhunter SIM card therefore always ensures maximum network coverage and the best possible reception, no matter where your camera is located.

In which countries can I use my Modernhunter camera?

You can use your Modernhunter camera in all countries of the European Union as well as in Switzerland, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

The Modernhunter SIM card is not tied to any specific country — you can simply take your camera with you, and it will work anywhere a supported mobile network is available. Once you are in one of the supported countries, your camera can capture and transmit images automatically — no settings need to be changed.

Yes, the Modernhunter SIM card can be used in all Modernhunter cameras as well as in cameras without a SIM lock.

However, please note: The Modernhunter SIM card can only send data to the Modernhunter server. Therefore, for image transmission to work, the camera must be linked to your account in the Modernhunter

Can I replace the SIM card?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with Modernhunter this is easily possible. As soon as a camera sends a photo, the SIM card used is automatically assigned to that camera.

If a SIM card becomes defective or needs to be replaced, you can simply use a new Modernhunter SIM card. Add it in the app under Menu → SIM cards. Tap the “+” icon in the top right corner and scan the barcode on the Modernhunter SIM card. This will add the SIM card to your account and automatically activate it.
