Smarter sending — as affordable as hardly any other SIM card

The Modernhunter
SIM Card.

With the Modernhunter SIM you run your trail camera as efficiently and affordably as rarely before. No subscription, no base fee, no contract and no minimum usage — you only pay when your camera actually sends recordings. Starting at just 0.8 cents per photo (1 coin).

  • A multi-network SIM that automatically connects to nearly any mobile network across Europe.
  • One prepaid balance shared by all your Modernhunter SIM cards — you only top up once.
  • No monthly or annual subscription, but Pay-per-Use: you're only charged when your camera actually sends a photo.
  • From just 0.8 cents per photo sent — so we don't shy away from a price comparison with cheap data cards either, while at the same time offering all the advantages listed above that a pure data card simply doesn't bring.

As of 06/2026, comparison based on the rates of Modernhunter, ICU Server, Zeiss, Seissiger, Hikmicro and Reviermanager. Photo of up to 300 KB each. Calculation basis: for each provider we apply the cheapest available tariff option; because non-expiring prepaid credit (coins/credits) is used up later, we only count the volume actually consumed, pro-rated to the cheapest pack price — surplus credit from part-used packs is not included in the price. Why only multi-network SIM cards?

Note: this comparison only includes multi-network SIM solutions — SIM cards for trail cameras that connect to every available mobile network. In practice that is a key criterion for reliable reception everywhere, even in remote areas.

02 · Credit

One credit
for all SIM cards.

With Modernhunter you top up one prepaid credit on your account and all cameras with a Modernhunter SIM card share this one credit. No top-up per camera. The Modernhunter credit also never expires.

03 · Billing

No subscription, no contract —
full cost control.

Subscription models rarely pay off for users: either the booked package is too small and you stop receiving recordings when you need them, or you pay for far too much data volume that ends up unused. Modernhunter therefore relies on fair per-recording billing instead of rigid subscriptions.

When you buy a Modernhunter "Hunter 4G Mini" trail camera, operation is free for the first four weeks. Ideal for testing the many possibilities of this camera together with the Modernhunter app.

4 WEEKS FREE
Subscription or pool

A subscription per camera or
one balance for all?

With subscription rates you pay a fixed amount per camera for a fixed photo quota per month. The quota is tied to the individual camera: what one camera doesn't use, another can't — and depending on the provider, unused volume expires at the end of the month.

Modernhunter deliberately relies on a pool solution: all cameras share a common balance, and you're only billed for what is actually sent — you never pay in advance for captures that never come.

In practice, 90 % of Modernhunter customers send on average 11 photos per day — only 5 % of users reach more than 30 photos per day.

From a user's perspective, we find rigid subscription rates of little use and the pool solution simply fairer. Our calculator even assumes that all cameras send the same number of photos — the best case for subscription rates. The more your cameras differ in how much they send, the greater the pool advantage becomes in practice.

Where the figure comes from

Why do we calculate with
11 photos per day?

We didn't pick the number arbitrarily: on its publicly accessible information page, ICU states around 24,000 images per year for 6 cameras. Converted, that's about 11 photos per camera and calendar day.

This value also matches our experience in the Modernhunter system. Individual cameras send more images at times and fewer at others — but viewed across a full year, 11 photos per day is a realistic average value.

Why switching pays off

With SIM-lock unlocking:
amortised after just over a year.

According to the Seissiger FAQ, the Supersim Edition can be converted for 90 to operate with any SIM card you like. After this unlock, the camera can also be used with a suitable Modernhunter SIM card.

In our example calculation with 11 photos per day, this results in savings of around 88 per year compared with Supersim. The one-time cost of the unlock has thus paid for itself after just over a year.

The conclusion

Top in price
and performance.

After just one year the difference is enormous — and with every additional year it grows even larger. Anyone using their camera long-term quickly saves many times the purchase price with Modernhunter.

According to a competitor, a camera sends on average 11 photos a day, or about 4,000 shots a year. At an average of 4,000 photos a year that costs only about 32 a year (≈ 2.66 a month). That makes Modernhunter cheaper than many data SIMs with fixed fees.

In addition the multi-network SIM automatically uses the best available network — across Europe. So your camera stays online even where other cards have no reception. And: if the camera doesn't send anything, you don't pay anything.

The difference: The Modernhunter SIM card was developed specifically for wildlife and surveillance cameras, combining low running costs with key advantages for real-world use:

  • Flexible network choice: Depending on availability at the location, the SIM card can connect to any of the supported mobile networks.
  • One balance for all SIM cards: You don't have to top up each camera or SIM card individually. Instead, you top up your balance once on your user account, and all your Modernhunter SIM cards can share that balance.
  • No fixed monthly subscription: You don't pay a fixed amount every month, but only when data is actually sent.
  • Built for camera use: The SIM card is designed for use in wildlife and surveillance cameras and is complemented by the features of the Modernhunter app.
