Setting Up a SIM-Lock-Free Camera with the Modernhunter SIM Card

Do you want to use a SIM-lock-free 4G trail camera with the Modernhunter SIM card? In these instructions we show you step by step which settings must be entered in the camera so that images are reliably transferred to your Modernhunter account.

These instructions refer to the camera model from the manufacturer's user manual, in which setup is carried out via the camera menu. Depending on the firmware version, the relevant menu items are called, among others, 4G, SIM Auto Match, Manual Setup, SMTP, Send To / Email and Transfer Mode.

Requirements

For the camera to work with the Modernhunter SIM card, you need:

  • a SIM-lock-free 4G trail camera of the camera model mentioned
  • an active Modernhunter SIM card
  • a suitable SD card
  • batteries or a suitable power supply
  • a Modernhunter account
  • a camera created in Modernhunter

Important: The recipient email address is generated automatically as soon as you create a new camera in Modernhunter. You'll need this address later in the camera menu.

Important note on the Modernhunter SIM card

The Modernhunter SIM card is intended for use with the Modernhunter system.

The Modernhunter SIM card sends exclusively to the Modernhunter server.

For this reason, always enter as the recipient email the address that is shown to you when you create the camera in Modernhunter. Other private or external recipient addresses are not intended for this purpose.

1. Prepare the camera

Open the camera and first insert the required batteries. Then use a suitable SD card.

Next, insert the Modernhunter SIM card into the camera's SIM card slot. Make sure that the SIM card is inserted the right way round.

Also mount the camera's antennas. Only then should the camera be switched on and set up.

2. Switch the camera to SETUP mode

Switch the camera to SETUP.

In this mode you can open the menu and make all the necessary settings. The camera usually searches for a mobile network automatically.

If the automatic detection does not work or the camera cannot establish a connection, the mobile data must be entered manually.

3. Enter the 4G settings

In the camera menu, open the section for the mobile settings.

Depending on the menu version, you'll find this section under:

4G → SIM Auto Match → Manual

or under:

4G → Manual Setup

There, enter the following APN details for the Modernhunter SIM card:

Setting Value
APN mhsim
User / Username leave blank
Password leave blank

Then save the entries in the camera menu.

Important: The username and password remain blank for the APN details. Only the APN mhsim is entered.

4. Enter the SMTP settings

So that the camera can transfer images to Modernhunter, the SMTP details must be stored in the camera menu.

To do this, open the section:

4G → SMTP

There, enter the following details:

Setting Value
Sender hunter@mh-cam.de
Account hunter@mh-cam.de
Password hunter
SMTP server mx0.mh-cam.de
SMTP port 25
SSL off / deactivated

Pay particular attention to SSL being deactivated. The SMTP port is 25.

5. Enter the recipient email

Next, the recipient address must be entered. This address is not freely chosen, but generated in Modernhunter.

To do this, create a new camera in your Modernhunter account. When creating the camera, you receive an individual recipient email address.

Enter this address in the camera menu under:

4G → Send To → Email

or, depending on the menu version:

Send To → Email 1

There, enter the recipient email address generated by Modernhunter and save the setting.

6. Set the transfer mode

In the camera menu you can specify whether photos, videos or both are to be transferred.

Depending on the version, the corresponding menu item is called, for example:

4G → Transfer Mode

For normal operation we recommend sending photos.

So choose:

Transfer Mode → Photo

This transfers the recorded images to Modernhunter.

7. Choose the image size for sending

Many cameras offer different image sizes when sending via SMTP. Depending on the menu version, you'll find the setting under:

SMTP/FTP Pic Options

For a fast and stable transfer, a smaller or medium sending size is recommended at first. An image file that is too large can slow down the transfer or cause problems in areas of weak mobile reception.

The original files generally remain stored on the SD card.

8. Check the daily limit

In the camera menu there is often the item:

Max Num/Day

This can be used to limit how many images are transferred per day. Check this setting if not all images are being sent.

For an initial function test, the daily limit should not be set too low.

9. Test the camera

After all the data has been entered, save the settings and leave the menu.

Then switch the camera back to operating mode. Trigger a test recording and wait briefly until the camera has transferred the image.

If everything was set up correctly, the image then appears in your Modernhunter account.

Common sources of error

The camera finds no network

Check whether the Modernhunter SIM card is inserted correctly and whether the antennas are firmly mounted. Also check whether the APN has been entered correctly:

mhsim

The username and password must remain blank.

The camera doesn't send any images

Check the SMTP details. Particularly important are:

  • SMTP server: mx0.mh-cam.de
  • Port: 25
  • SSL: deactivated
  • Account: hunter@mh-cam.de
  • Password: hunter

Also check whether the camera email address generated by Modernhunter has been entered as the recipient.

Images don't arrive in Modernhunter

Make sure that the camera has been created in Modernhunter and that the recipient email address generated there is entered in the camera exactly.

Even a single typo in the recipient address prevents assignment in the Modernhunter system.

Not all images are transferred

In the camera menu, check the item Max Num/Day. If a daily limit is set there, the camera transfers only the specified number of images per day.

Also check the image size for sending. In areas of weak mobile reception, a smaller sending size can be more reliable.

Conclusion

With the Modernhunter SIM card, the SIM-lock-free 4G trail camera can be integrated directly into the Modernhunter system. What is decisive is that the APN details, SMTP access data and the recipient email address generated by Modernhunter are entered correctly in the camera menu.

Once setup is complete, the camera sends its images via the Modernhunter SIM card to the Modernhunter server, and the recordings appear in your Modernhunter account.
